Duke Ellington's Sacred Concert for Soprano, Chorus and Big Band
One year before his death, Duke Ellington created three concerts of sacred music, large-scale works that incorporated dancers, choruses, and gospel singers in addition to his own band. Describing these efforts as "the most important thing I have ever done," he said they allowed him to "say openly what I have been saying on my knees." Austin Chamber Music Center brings together a combination of the tunes from each of the concerts featuring local artists who embrace the genre, including the powerful African-American soprano, Gloria Quinlan, the Huston-Tillotson Jubilee Singers, and an Austin-based all-star Big Band lead by Keith Winking, in this 9th annual concert celebrating works of African-American composers. This concert is FREE and open to the public. Begins at 3 p.m. Huston-Tillotson University, King Seabrook Chapel, 900 Chicon Street.
